Center of Mass of a system of particles is the representative point for its translative motion. Translative motion and rotation motion are independent of each other.

Definition of Center of Mass
Center of mass of a system of particles is a point where mass of the system can be assumed to be concentrated so that mass moment due to concentrated mass about the point becomes equal to the net summation of mass moment about the same point.
Center of mass of the system of particles is a point about which the net mass moment due to all particles becomes zero.
So if we consider as origin then,
Center of mass of the symmetrical object lies at its geometrical center.
Center of mass of a plane object always lie on the axis of symmetry. Axis about which mass is distributed symmetrically is called axis of symmetry.
In case of 3-D object center of mass always lies on plane of symmetry.
Concept of center of mass comes under study of Rigid body dynamics. In next chapters we will go through various aspects of center of mass. We will learn how to calculate center of mass for various kind of objects and geometry. Further we’ll learn how to solve various kind of problems using concepts of rigid body dynamics.
